Many ask me: What is SEO? Why should I care?
Well I have an answer. Search Engine Optimization is about making your content desirable for a specific search engine to serve in queries as the first result. Search Engines are programs that retrieve the data that the user is searching for easily and quickly. Search Engines serve content based on the analysis of the algorithms of available digital assets. Those digital assets can be anything from an app, webpage, a pdf, image, video, music, books, shopping results, and more. In 2017 I want to challenge you to think of Search Engine Optimization beyond just Google.com.
Did you know that 44% of consumers start their search on Amazon.com? Did you know that only 9% of small businesses Use YouTube for marketing purposes? Did you know that 1 Billion People use YouTube for an average of 40 minutes daily? Did you know that users watch 46,000 years of content annually on YouTube? These statistics are very important to understand the value of using these platforms to reach your target audience. As a CEO, Chief Marketing Officer, Marketing Director, Business Owner, or Entrepreneur it is a fact that it takes 6 contacts or 6 touches for your target customers to even acknowledge and remember your brand.
This does not include the time it takes for your target prospects to know, like and trust you enough to buy. In order to speed up your prospects down the buyer experience path it is important to engage your prospects before the sales process even begins. Whether it is Google, YouTube, Amazon, Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, or some other platform with a search engine it is imperative that you get found. Here are FOUR universal Search Engine Optimization Strategies that apply to all platforms no matter if it is an ecommerce behemoth like Amazon, Google, or Facebook. Please remember and implement these best practices:
There are free and paid tools and services that give you data on the phrases that people are searching for or talking about on Google, Yahoo, Facebook, and more. Please take advantage of them. Buzzsumo.com, Semrush.com, Google Keyword Planner and Market Samurai are just a few that
More is better. The more content you have the better it is for your search results. Whether it is a web page or Facebook business page, you want to provide the platform that you want to be found on with as much information as possible. For Facebook it is filling out all of the options that you can. Google, it is about your unclickable content being valuable and your meta data (title, description, and keywords) being complete.
Less is Less
During my marketing career, I have noticed a reluctance by many brands to use lengthy explanations to promote their offerings on their website. Instead they rely on pretty images and video to gain rank. Unclickable text is so 1996, but it still works!
Be Authentic, Build Relationships
There is no fast, short cut to building a movement or loyal customer base. It takes time, elbow grease, and tons of content. Interacting with your prospects and related communities as much as you can is the best way to go. People ultimately promote, buy from, and follow brands/businesses/people/music that they like know and trust.
